Your music asks answered by a lady who has a song for that

I love music. I have always loved music. My respite since the first grade is listening to music by myself and getting lost in my thoughts. I’m one of those people iPods were made for because I needed that many gigabytes of music storage. I was looking up more MySpace quizzes and some of them were way...too personal. Like when I was 20-21, the stakes were lower. Now, I’m married and quite frankly I don’t want to go back to my embarrassing and frustrating single days. So I found this thing about Music Asks and that is one of those things that you can AMA me. So I hope you discover some deep cuts that you like.

Lenten Intentions: Setting Daily Intentions

For the record, I’m not great about Lent but I do try to give something up or fast as it were. When I was 10 I tried to give up math homework but the priest said that wasn’t really fasting. I was foiled. One year in high school I gave up eyeshadow because I looked forward to it every day and no one really noticed but I did. One year I gave up self-doubt and promptly failed. This year I’m doing daily intentions as you do with yoga and secular saint Dolly Parton does something similar every day. It’s been really nice.

I Ardently Admired This Book: Pride and Prejudice

I know I said I wanted to read happier books and not cry. But this book was so sweet and it was as Jane Austen said “light, bright, and sparkling.” So it was a happy cry and I was moved. Wow, this book started one way and zagged on me. I didn’t realize it was about seeing your parents as human, grief, and the ties between sisters and dear girlfriends. It also is learning that you can still love yourself and make mistakes. That’s what dating is, you figure out what you want but you learn a lot about yourself. Much like Lizzy Bennet, I run my mouth and can be way nastier than I mean to be. I am known for going for the jugular too. However, I loved watching Lizzy fall in love. I loved watching Darcy change. It was really timeless.

5 Body Positive Affirmations For Days When You Need Them

I’ve written about this ad nauseum but something happened this week that really hit me. I posted something from one of the mom blogs that said something like “I think all women have beautiful bodies but I can’t accept my own.” I wrote “ouch” because I am so guilty of this. So many of my friends who (biased here) but are stone cold foxes, agreed. So it’s really easy to say “thick thighs save lives” but a whole other thing to live that mantra. Here are some things I’m trying to do and the ways I deal with these issues.

Perpetual New Kid: My Military Family Story and Planting Roots as Grown Woman

Support organizations like Operation Homefront and National Military Family Association that help military families. If someone is in the military, you can thank them for their service and thank their family too. Do yard work for a military family while someone is deployed. Cook a meal for a military family. Get coffee with a military spouse. Tell your kid to be nice to new kids because it’s scary and they are overwhelmed. If they seem snobby or reserved...it’s a defense mechanism. If there is a new military family in your community welcome them. Maybe be more flexible with military families during holidays. Give them more time to travel. Respect the fact that the military is not monolithic and appreciate the service they do but don’t make assumptions.

Valentine's Movie Night In

Do you have a film you love to watch with your significant other? Is it romantic or is it just goofy? Is it both? Are films more of a relationship thing than songs? Do you and your partner fight over blankets while watching movies? Just asking because my husband and I definitely do. Maybe for V-Day, I should just let him use my favorite one. See I’m already getting more romantic.

How Should I Use Ginger?

I was going through my spice cabinet yesterday and I realized I had a ton of powdered ginger that I didn’t use that much of. I realized it was an underrated spice (in Western cooking which is what I’m most familiar with. I would never dare to assume I knew anything about Eastern flavors. Bow down to those fabulous chefs in Asia) and I wanted to use more of it. Ginger is such an interesting flavor and it adds a zest to things.
