Fashion Stories: Intro
As a brief intro, one of my favorite things is fashion. As a child I watched old movies and was obsessed with how the women dressed. I love the special outfits for every occasion like answering a phone in your bedroom- those fabulous sheer nightgowns with feathered sleeves or the amazing hats they would wear out. I keep on thinking about Katherine Hepburn in Bringing Up Baby. I loved the gold lame outfits they would wear. You could telegraph the motivations of each female character by the high end clothes they wore. For example Jean Hagen and Debbie Reynolds in Singing in the Rain, has there ever been a better use of America's Sweetheart v. the conniving vixen than the wardrobe use in that movie. Fresh faced Debbie Reynolds in gorgeous modest dresses and Jean Hagen in furs and sequins. My mother, sister, and I have watched the Oscars almost every year and in high school I would try to see which dresses were "trending" and try to get a dress that matched it for prom. I obsessively read InStyle and cut out pictures of models and ingenues in the fashions of the time- the early 2000's which meant Sex and the City and a lot of low-rise jeans. So once I got my own money, I spent it on a lot of fashion. Suddenly, I could fit in and afford the clothes I wanted. As a result, during my maternity leave, part of my closet collapsed. I had to dig through and find pieces to keep and the rest I sold or am in the process of selling. When your friends go through your day to day wardrobe and find their Halloween costumes two years in a row-you may have a problem. I wanted to go through my closet and tell the stories of the pieces I kept and why I kept them. So please enjoy-some of these items are sentimental and rarely worn. Some are things I basically live in. So let's take a dive into my closet and I'll tell you the tales of my clothes article by article.
