Get Glittered Up: A Mantra

Get Glittered Up: A Mantra

Shimmering

Today my family went to a Caribbean Festival. We mostly went for Jerk Chicken (which is something my husband loves) and I was curious to see what it was about. We had a lovely time. It was a smaller festival but there was dancehall music (something that takes me back to my “pubbing days” abroad in England) and lots and lots of glitter and feathers. I found a glitter bar and I was looking at the prices and I just thought “just do it.” I talked with the woman who did it who has danced in the Toronto Caribbean festival and is a professional MUA. She has worked with Tom Ford cosmetics (AHHH!!!) Anyway, I’m a 33 year old woman who was with my husband and pushing a toddler in a stroller and I stopped and got glittered up. It was the best decision I’ve made in a while.

Why? Because I’m Extra.

I used to be embarrassed of my extra-ness. I was fortunate to have people in my life who have always loved me for me but being extra is not cool. It’s not. I’m not a “cool girl.” I will always smile way…too much. I laugh really loud. I’m a very earnest person. So yeah, I’m not going to sit there and act nonplussed when I can add some color to my life. I’ll wear a dark lip to my academic job and have a dinosaur pencil stapler because I WANT to. I think there is this idea that you can’t be intelligent and love glitter. Well doubters, I’m here to tell you I have a master’s degree and I will stop and get glittered up. When my husband and I were at Disney, you bet your ass I stopped at the Bibbity Bobbity Boutique and got fairy dust sprinkled on my head. Why not sparkle when you can? Just to sparkle? You don’t need a reason. Having a glittery opportunity is all you need. What I’m saying is: wear a tiara, wear a red lip, get a mermaid shirt, wear chunky jewelry, if it makes you happy do it. Don’t let anyone steal your shine. If someone can’t handle it, get them out of your life. I am fortunate to have a bunch of intense sparkly characters in my life. I cherish them. So shine on my crazy diamonds! I love you!

If you get the chance to be extra sparkly- do it!.png

This is what I looked like today after I was made over by @theglitterexpress (check her out on instagram). It was awesome.
